Works great with the Playtex Breast Milk Storage System for Pumping! (2010-03-21)
This bottle works great with my Medela pump in style, using the Playtex Breast Milk Storage Kit. I like that this bottle can use the same nipple as the Dropins. Our daughter has never had any issues transitioning between breast and bottle. Playtex offers a variety of nipple (slow, medium, fast, variable,&cereal) flows so it is easy to find a nipple flow that matches your flow :), also a very important factor when switching. The kit only comes with one adapter ring, so you will need to purchase two. My daughter has never had any problems with spit up or cholic so I all I can say is that these bottles didn't create any problems.
Pros to using the VENATIRE WIDE/NATURAL SHAPE is that they're reusuable so no additional cost like the dropins. They're really easy to clean since they come apart, and the parts are easy to clean. You don't have to use the bottle rings that come with the kit, as they fit right on the adapter. Just remove the bottle from the adapter ring after pumping, put the sealing disc on, and store until feeding. I've found that the storage kits (deluxe kit and the ones in the permium nurser gift set) including sealing discs that are the flimsy silicone pieces that fit into the nipple ring work better with the Ventaires than the sealing discs in this kit. We've had a few leak from the top when mixing (we have to add some prune juice for our daughter) a bottle with the hard top sealing disc. We store these bottles on their bottom in the fridge, and have never had a problem with leaks. So really, I would recommend looking for the deluxe/premium storage kit.
When you're ready for the bottle just warm up some water in the microwave, and then plop the bottle into the water. It only takes a few minutes since, and whalaa (NO NEED FOR A BOTTLE WARMER! We warm Dropins this way too, it's a little faster since the liners are thinner). When the bottle is warm remove the sealing disc, & the insert the nipple.
I have never tried freezing milk in the bottles although I know that the storage kit is advertized to be able too. If I have extra milk I just freeze it in an ice cube tray, and store in Ziploc freezer bags. This system has turned out great for if lil' one finishes her bottle and is still hungry but doesn't need another entire feeding, just put a cube or two in...no wasted milk!
OVERALL, THIS BOTTLE IS A GREAT CHOICE FOR THE BREASTFEEDING MOM WHO CAN'T BE READILY AVAILABLE 24/7 :)
Great but too many parts to clean (2010-03-19)
These bottles were recommended to me when I was getting ready to go back to work after having breastfed my son exclusively for 3 months, because these are closest to breastfeeding.
Well, my son refused to take any bottle for weeks, until I got him these, so for that they were a God send plus they seemed to help with his gas.
Leaking was a problem when I forgot to put the disk on the bottom which is likely to happen only when you start using these bottles because after while it becomes second nature to put them back together correctly. And if you don't tighten them well, they will also leak, but again, once you get the hang of it, shouldn't be a problem.
What drove me nuts was having to take them apart to clean and then back together. Way too many parts and too many nooks and crannies. Some people might like this, like another reviewer who said other bottles always had a film of milk on the bottom , but I wanted something that was hygienic and practical at the same time! I needed simple and efficient. I ended up dreading washing these bottles. It seemed that I was always the most exhausted when I HAD to wash the many parts. Again, that might not be a big deal to some, but for me it wasn't working.
I ended up switching to the drop-ins. I could get the same gas reducing system while reducing the number of parts that had to be cleaned, the taking apart and putting back together AND since they don't have a bottom to begin with, there was no film of milk at the bottom! The first night I rinsed the drop ins I was sold. What I relief to be done so quickly! The downside is the cost of buying liner refills, but I'd rather the added cost than to frustrate myself every night. You have to decide what's most important to you.
One thing though, that annoys me about the drop ins and the wide bottles, is that they ALL come with slow flow nipples, so if you have a baby older than 3 months and want the fast flow, you have to buy them separately and $4 for two seems quiet expensive to me. Kind of a rip-off. Why not at least put the fast flow nipples on the larger bottles which are most likely going to be for bigger babies? Hummm....
Playtex VentAire = Happier Baby (2010-02-02)
We've tried just about every baby bottle out there. The Playtex Ventaire significantly reduces the amount of air our son takes in when feeding. I give the bottles 4 stars instead of 5 because each bottle consists of 5 pieces. As such, thoroughly hand washing the bottles after each use can be time intensive. I have not had a problem with the bottles leaking. I did receive a few which had the outer lettering rub off but Playtex replaced them.
good nipple (2010-01-17)
This is the only nipple my daughter would take after leaving the hospital. Its an easy bottle to clean, however you must never forget to insert the little disk into the bottom of the bottle. Its very frustrating to have formula leak out onto the countertops at 3 am when your half asleep and the baby is hungy!!! lol
Not the best, went with Born Free instead! (2009-12-05)
These bottles weren't great, but they were acceptable.
Negatives: My daughter liked them as a newborn but as she got older the slow nipples were too slow and the fast nipples were way too fast (made her gag and spit up). They were too many pieces to wash and put together and they leaked. I think washing the plastic stoppers in the dishwasher may have stretched them out a little casuing the leaking. A few times my husband forgot to put the plastic stopper on and dumped milk all over the counter (not daddy friendly!). I also felt that the wide nipple was a little too wide for my baby's mouth. I chose these because we mostly breast fed and I thought it would be most similar but I think the nipples are a little too wide.
Positives: Cheaper than most other vent bottles. They did seem to help with preventing gas with the slow nipple. We had no issues going from breast to bottle and back again.
I would recommend the Born Free bottles instead. We have now switched over completely to them. They are a little more pricey (can get good deals on ebay) but the medium nipples are perfect for my 5 month old. They are also easy to wash and put back together.
